Proofing your basement against pest infestations

Posted on Jul 13, 2013

Pests can get into your home in many ways and multiply in any number of spaces.  Basements are particularly vulnerable to infestations.  They're dark and subterranean.  They're the site of hidden nooks, crannies, and cracks leading to the outdoors.  People often neglect to regularly inspect their basements; boxes, furniture or equipment in storage may sit there for months or years, undisturbed.

Pest control and prevention depends in part on vigilance and basic home maintenance, including the following tips for proofing your basement against pests:

  • Don't store firewood, lumber, or other wood construction materials in your basement.  If you place them outside, don't stack them up right next to your house, as this could be an open invitation to termites and other pests.
  • Be careful about what kinds of food you store in your basement. If it's something like canned or jarred food, then it may be acceptable.  However, foods that are perishable or containers that have been opened should be kept out of the basement.
  • Reduce the clutter in your basement as much as possible. Periodically move around the boxes or other things you have in storage to check for signs of pest infestation and any other problems, such as water leaks.  Items in storage but have been standing around for a long time can provide a decent shelter for all kinds of pests.
  • Keep your basement dry. Many bugs, including roaches and termites, love dark, moist places.  If there's dampness on the walls, ceiling, or floor investigate the source and confirm that there aren't any plumbing problems.  You can also use dehumidifiers to reduce general moisture.
  • Inspect the outside of your home to make sure that rain runoff isn't coming in.  Your home should have adequate gutters and drains.
  • Look around for any cracks that would need to be sealed up.
  • Keep the basement clean.  A cleaner environment, with fewer crumbs and other particles, will be less attractive to pests.
