The Signs That You May Require Bedbug Treatment

Posted on Feb 6, 2014

Most people are aware of the serious health risk that bedbugs can cause. Yet, due to their small size and hidden lifestyle, most people are unaware when their beds have become infested. It is important however to be able to recognize the signs that bedbugs may be present in your home, as they can carry germs and diseases that can infect humans. To help you determine if you may require bedbug treatment, here are a few of the common signs that bedbugs are present in your home.

Bites on Your Body

One of the biggest problems that makes the presence of bedbugs hard to detect is that they rarely show themselves. This will make their bite the best sign you will have to go on that you may have bedbugs. Since people do not see the bedbugs however, they often mistake their bite for a rash, a spider bite, a mosquito bite, and even the chicken pox. However, if you know what to look for, it can be easy to distinguish bedbug bites from other bug bites. Bedbug bites cause itchy, swollen welts on the body. These welts usually appear in a zigzag pattern across the body. The presence of numerous bites can be a good indicator that you may have bedbugs.

Signs of Bedbugs

Ultimately, since bedbugs are rarely seen by the people whose beds they infect, it is necessary that you know to look out for the more subtle signs that bedbugs are present in your bed. The signs can include:

  • A musty odor: While not everyone notices this scent, bedbugs produce a distinctive scent as a way of communicating with one another. If you notice such a scent coming from your mattress, it could be a sign that you have bedbugs.
  • Exoskeletons: Bedbugs have an outer shell that they periodically shed and leave behind. If you find such a remaining on your bed and/or bedding, it is likely that you have bedbugs.
  • Excrement: Black specks on your mattress and/or bedding could be the bedbug’s excrement. Look out for this common sign of bedbugs.
